Pepe Silvia

Inspiration

Pepe Silvia was my introduction to the entire 3D animation pipeline. It was a University project where we went from an audio clip to an animatic and finally to an animation. I had recently watched Arcane and I really wanted to try something really stylized.

Animation Pipeline:

In the class we took our projects through the full 3D animation film pipeline. I decided on the audio I wanted to use and designed a sock puppet character. I then made an Animatic, Modeled, Textured, and Rigged the Character and Environment, and finally Animated, Rendered, and Composited the short.

Stylization and Textures:

Arcane and Spiderverse both really blew my mind with their stylization and I knew that I wanted to do something unique with the visual style of Pepe Silvia. In order to texture the models in a painted style, I created new “from camera” UV projections, painted over them in procreate, and then projection mapped those textures back on the original UVs.

Compositing:

From the beginning of the project I knew that compositing would be a big part of the stylization I wanted. Elements like the eyes and certain shadows were made and composited in. Most of all, a wobbly displacement was added at different scales throughout the elements of the video, to give the video a hand painted feel.
